Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Fat distribution of the body is distorted with increasing age and body weight. Generally, the first area that is affected by this change is the abdomen. As the deformity increases with increasing weight, irreversible abdominal wall changes occur. Pregnancy and labor also contribute to this process. Rapid weight alterations, some medications and hormonal disorders are other factors that speed up the deformation.

When the only problem in the abdomen is subcutaneous fat excess, this can be solved by liposuction alone, but when this is accompanied by abdominal wall deficiency and/or skin excess, each of these problems should be corrected individually. This is only possible with a surgical intervention called “abdominoplasty”. Simply, abdominoplasty involves removal of the”excess” fatty tissue and skin, and correction of the muscular laxity in the abdominal wall; resulting in a straight and tight andominal contour. This is a 2 to 3 hour operation, which is performed under general anesthesia. A one-night hospital stay is usually necessary. The operation is performed through a special “bikini incision”, whose scar is hidden under a bikini or underwear. The length of this scar depends on the extent of the deformity. Post-operative healing period is 7-10 days. Patient can return to daily activities afterwards.

Abdominoplasty is usually combined with liposuction procedures for thighs and buttocks, or breast surgery. A “mini” abdominoplasty procedure can be applied to patients with limited deformities.
